If you’re planning a vacation with your children, Washington DC is a great place to go. The city is exciting and most of the museums, monuments, and galleries are free. You and your family could spend a day or two just visiting the Smithsonian Museums and not spend a dime on admission. There are also many affordable hotels right in the District where you can stay and then walk or Metro to all the attractions.

One of the real benefits of visiting Washington DC is the Metro. This is the public transportation system that goes everywhere in the city and also out to the surrounding cities in Maryland and Virginia. Metro prices are very reasonable especially if you purchase a Metro card. This makes it easy to add money whenever you need it.

The city is also home to some of the best restaurants in the world. There are dining places offering literally every cuisine in the world. From chili to burgers to porterhouse steaks, DC offers incredible dining for everyone.

There are eleven museums and galleries located on the National Mall. The National Zoo and another six museums are located within the National Capital Area. The Museum of National History is always a favorite with children and the Air and Space Museum is very popular with all visitors.

The African American Museum and the American Indian Museum are two more very popular attractions. There are also several private museums that are great for families. These include the Newseum, the International Spy MUseum and the D.C. Fire and EMS Museum.

When visiting Washington DC, you must visit the monuments. This is the home of the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial, the World War II Memorial and the Martin Luther King Memorial. Two of our favorites are the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. If you can take the time to visit the city in late April, you can see the gorgeous cherry trees in bloom around the Jefferson Memorial Tidal Basin.
